Alex Stein was born in 1957 in Chisinäu, RSS Moldova, made Alyiah in 1973, graduated from the Leo Back High School in Haifa, and joined the Israel Defense
Forces. During his military service, he participated in the Litani and the Peace for
Galilee operations and served as a legal officer at the Military Governor's office
in Gaza. He holds an LL.B. and an LL.M. degree from the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem and a Ph.D. from the University of London. During his long academic ca- reer he served as a Professor of Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, as well
as at Cardozo and Brooklyn Law Schools in New York City, and taught as a Visiting
Professor at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Oxford, Toronto and other universities.
He is the author of four books, two of which are considered path-breaking in
the fields of torts and evidence, and over sixty articles many of which have appeared in
the world's leading journals.
His areas of expertise include torts, evidence, medical malpractice, and eco-
nomic analysis of law.
He was invited to speak in these areas in many academic events across the world
and his opinions have been cited by international media outlets that included New York Times, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and Nature. In August 2018 he was ap- pointed Justice ofthe Supreme Court of Israel.
