His father emigrated from Bessarabia to Argentina in 1904. He is the brother of Noel, Numo, Isaias Werthein. He is one of Argentina's biggest bankers.
Businessman and banker. He founded the Banco Mercantil Argentino in 1963, served as vice chairman of the FundaciĆ³n Banco Mercantil, vice president of the Argentina Chamber of Advertisers, president of the American Council of Commerce and Production, president of the Argentina Chamber of Commerce for Southeast Asia and vice president Swiss-Argentine Cultural Foundation, member of the Sociedad Rural Argentina, president of the Stock Exchange of Buenos Aires, a member of the Association of Friends of the National Museum of Fine Arts and also played an important role in the development of Mercosur.
In 1987 he was awarded the "Medaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris" and a year later, was awarded the 'Golden International Wizo" as President of the Sister Cities Foundation. In 1995 he was appointed a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and in 1996 was decorated as a Knight of Grace and Devotion of the Sovereign Military Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, Ecumenical Knights of Malta. In the 1990's he founded one of the leading business groups in Argentina, the "Group W" (Werthein), which now controls Telecom in the country, owns agribusiness investments in the financial system, insurance and telecommunications.
