His great-grandfather, Jose Aaron Friedmann, was born in Bessarabia. In 1976 his familymoved to Cuba, where he enrolled in Medicine. However, acouple of months later he chose to leave his university studies to take up a military career, joining the Camilo Cienfuegos school, dependent on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba (FAR). There he shared with almost a hundred Chileans who were preparing militarily under the support of the government of Fidel Castro. In mid-1983 Pellegrin returned to Chile to become the leader of thenascent or- ganization, acquiring from that moment the rank of "commander". The development of the FPMR, its organization, and the evolution of its operational techniques were directlyrelated to it, which from that moment assumed the name of "Commander José Miguel". Pellegrin soon imbued the Front with his great revolutionary enthusiasm. In July 1987 the bankruptcy became final. Pellegrin decided to form the AutonomousFPMR, detaching himself from the Communist Party of Chile, being fol- lowed by a large number of militants. As a result of this at that time, his trips to Cuba were made constant, where he began to create a support network with the approval of Fidel Castro himself and other high-ranking officials on the island. In addition, in Havana there was also another important frontist leader, Galvarino Apablaza, who collaborated closely with Pellegrin.
