His father was born in Chisinäu, Bessarabia. Alexandr Alov was a participant ni the Second World War. He has fought in many important operations in several European countries. In 1945 he was wounded in the head.
In 1951 he graduated the production faculty at VGIK in Moscow. From 1951 to 1957 he was a director at the Dovienko studio in Kiev, and from 1957 he worked at the Mosfilm film studio.
Among his best-known works are BET and TEEPAH 43. The work Tehran 43 became the leader of cinema revenues in the Soviet Union. Among the actors who played in this production were Alain Delon, Claude Jade and Curd Jürgens.
Starting with 1980, together with V. Naumov, he worked as a pedagogue. They ran the VGIK workshop.
His artistic activity has been appreciated by alot of awards at international com- petitions. His awards cover several film productions throughout his career. He was awarded at the Moscow Film Festivals (1957 and 1958), Venice (Special Jury Prize, 1961), Brussels (1962), Yerevan (Special Jury Prize, 1978), Brussels (Special Jury Prize, 1978), Norway (Film Producers Award, 1978), Vilnius (Grand Prix, 1981), Moscow (Golden Award, 1981), Moscow (Rodina Community Award, 1981), Kiev (Grand Prix, 1984).
