The filmmaker's family is from Sochireni from Bessarabia, where they lived
until the mid-1920s, and emigrated to Rio de Janeiro. Henrique Goldman was born
in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and studied in Rome, Italy, at the Academia Nazionale D'Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico. He moved to London in 1992 and made several docu-
mentaries in Africa for Rai Television and Unicef. In 1998, he recorded and directed his first feature film Ixcan, which was in Guatemala. Princesa produced by Rebecca O BRIEN, was presented at the Sundance Festival in 2001 and was shortlisted for the Edinburgh and Rio de Janeiro film festivals, among others. Princesa won the Best Foreign Film Award at the Los Angeles Outfest Film Festival in 2001 and is the most watched Brazilian feature film on Youtube, with over 5 million views. He wrote, pro- duced and directed Jean Charles, who was screened for the first time at the Toronto Film Festival and won the award for Best Screenplay at the Festival Dinard's British
Film Award and Best Director at the Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival. He has also been selected for numerous festivals around the world. More recently, he wrote and
directed On o m e da morte based on a true story of a Brazilian assassin who killed 492
people. He has regularly taught at the National School of Film and Television and the London Film School, facilitated a low-budget filmmaking course for young people at GEM TV, a charitable organization based e in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
