He was born into the family of Gherson and Frima Grobman. When he was three years old, his family emigrated to Peru (1930), where he studied at the Colegio San Andres School and the National Agricultural School of Peru (Escuela Nacional de Agricultura). Later, he graduated the Department of Agronomy at Ohio State University in the United States and received a doctorate from Harvard
University, where he defended his doctoral thesis in biology specializing in genetics (1962). He was responsible for research and development for Latin America at the
Northrup King seed and breeding company (which became part of Syngenta). He has worked as a consultant for the World Bank for Agriculture in various countries (in- cluding Turkey, China and Russia).
He founded the National Institute for Agricultural Research in Peru (Instituto Nacional de Investigacion y PromociĆ³n Agraria de Peru) and was its first director. President of the PeruBiotec biotechnology company (Lima).
The main scientific works in thefield of genetics, molecular biology and corn se- lection, as wel as soybeans, legumes, other cultivated and tropical plants. Commander of the Peruvian Order of Merit in Agriculture (Orden del Merito Agricola del Peru), Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professor at the National Agricultural University of Peru (1978).
