Son of Vera Rubin. David Rubin, a researcher in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, has been elected a fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The AGU fellows are a select group of distinguished scientists who have made exceptional contributions to their research fields and attained scientific eminence in
the Earth and space sciences.
Rubin studies sedimentology and sediment transport in modern and ancient oceans, beaches, rivers, and deserts, on Earth and on other planets. As a participating scientist in the NASA Mars Science Laboratory, he has been involved in analysis of sedimentary structures for the Mars Curiosity Rover mission. He worked with the U.S. Geological Survey to study the effects of water releases from the Glen Canyon Dam on restoration of sand bars in the Grand Canyon.
Rubin has also made important theoretical contributions to the understanding of dune formation. In 2011, he was awarded the Francis J. Pettijohn Award for excel- lence in sedimentology by the SEPM Society for Sedimentary Geology.
Co-author of the books: A Rock Record of Complex Aeolian Bedforms in a Hesperian Desert Landscape: The Stimson Formation as Exposed in the Murray Buttes, Gale Crater, Mars; Alternating wet and dry depositional environments recorded in the stratigraphy of Mount Sharp at Gale crater, Mars; and others.
