Moisei Shkud, as the chiefengineer of the State Union Design Institute of the Ministry of Communications of the USSR, suggested and implemented a number of new brilliant technical solutions on radio objects that allowed the broadcast of TV and radio programs from the Olympic Games in Moscow all over the world.
In the 60s when the construction of television centers in the Soviet Union was
topical, Shkud, as the chief engineer, along with his colleagues, was assigned to lead
the construction of the Ostankino television tower. This project made his name popu- lar worldwide. He was awarded Lenin prize for this fundamental construction.
The decision to build a 540-meter-high television tower was made in 1957. The Soviet broadcasting network needed to be expanded: the Shabolovka tower could not cope with the increasing volume of broadcasts.
At an altitude of 337 meters, it was planned to open theobservation deck. Many foreign engineers did not believe that such a grand building could be constructed on a relatively shallow foundation, but they made a mistake. Moisei Shkud brought those doubts into the wonderful reality.
In the 60s of the last century, this telecommunication system was widely used. However, it wasn't available for everyone. Exclusively party leaders of the state, repre- sentatives ofvariousauthorities could appreciate its really numerous benefits.
