His parents has emigrated from Bessarabia. Sidney Weinhouse served as Chair of the Division of Biochemistry at the Institute for Cancer Research at Fox Chase and as Director of the Fels Research Institute at Temple University Me of Scriencedical School. During these years, he made significant contributions in the area of isoen-zyme expression in cancer tissue and glucokinase. Weinhouse received many honors and awards throughout his career, including the American Association for Cancer Research's Clowes Memorial Award (1972). He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1979. In addition to having a productive research career, Weinhouse was active in several other aspects of science.
He served three 4-year terms and two ex officio terms on the Board of Directors of the American Association for Cancer Research between 1957 and 1984 and was president of the Association from 1981 to 1982. Weinhouse also served as editor of Cancer Research from 1969 through 1979. During that time he doubled the size of the Editorial Board in order to ensure thorough and equitable review of submitted papers. He also expanded the journal from 2500 pages to more than 5300 pages per year. When his term as Editor was over, Weinhouse served as Associate Editor from 1980 to 1987 and as Cover Editor from 1986 to 1999. He also served two terms as a member of the Editorial Board of the ]BC.
