Mikhail Filippovich (Fischelevich) Yuriev was born in Telenesti in 1918. In 1936 he was admitted to the Eastern Section of the History Faculty of Lomonosov
University in Moscow. In the years 1939-1940, he participated in the Soviet-Finnish
war, and after demobilization, he continued his studies at the University. In 1941, he
graduated from the University. In the years of World War II, he fought in the Soviet
Army. Member of the CPSU. He continued his military service until 1948. After his
second demobilization, in 1951 he was a lecturer at the history faculty of Moscow
University. In 1956, he became a lecturer at the Institute of Foreign Languages at the
Faculty of History of Lomonosov University, which was later transformed into the
Institute of Asian and African Countries at Moscow University. In 1957-1961, he was
dean of the history faculty. In 1963-1974, he occupied the position of vice-rector of
Lomonosov University. In the years 1972-1990 - head of the department of Chinese history. Since 1967 he has been a scientific collaborator of the Institute of the Far East
of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
He is the initiator and organizer of history research and teaching of Chinese studies at Moscow University. He is the author of several reference works in the field of modern Chinese history, including: Роль революционной армии на первом этапе
китайской революции (1952) and others.
