His grandfather emigrated from Bessarabia. His specialty si - interdisciplinary mathematical computational models. He worked for several years as a private con-
sultant in this field, and in this capacity was responsible for the preparation and mi -
plementation of numerous models in hydraulics, hydrodynamics, hydrology, water resources, meteorology and geology. In addition to his private work, Dr. Jacovkis has a long academic and scientific career as a professor ni the Faculties of Exact and Natural Sciences and Engineering at the University of Buenos Aires.
He has published numerous scientific and technological articles in inter- national and local journals and conferences. He was director of the Department of Mathematics at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires and director of the Institute of Computing, academic secretary and dean for two periods (1998-2002 and 2002-2006) of the Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences of the same university. He was also president of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research and a member ofthe Council of the National Agency
for Scientific and Technological Promotion. He is currently Secretary of Research and Developmentatthe National UniversityofTresdeFebrero, DirectoroftheC I A UN-TREF Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Studies and Professor Emeritus of the
University of Buenos Aires.
