Richard Baltzan

The son of David Baltzan. He served as chief of medicine at Saskatoon's St. Paul's Hospital and clinical professor of medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. He is past president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan, the Federation of Provincial Medical Licensing Authority, the Medical Council of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He recognized the importance of physician public accountability and estab- lished one of the most progressiveeducational tenets for physicians in the world with the Maintenance of Certification Program, in which all member physicians of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons ofCanada must demonstrate their dedication and commitment towards ongoing learning and growth. Dr. Baltzan was instrumental in establishing the first dialysis unit in Saskatchewan at S.t Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon. He was an integral member of the transplantation team that performed the second kidney transplant in Canada and the first in Saskatchewan. As chiefofthe medical staff at St. Paul's Hospital, he established the first same day surgery unit in Saskatchewan. Dr. Baltzan was investeda s an Officer of the Order of Canadai n 2010 and is a recipient of theQueen's Diamond Jubilee Medal, 2012. He is a Fellow in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and was inducted into the McGill Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 for his excellence in Hockey.
