Mihai Cimpoi is a distinguished Moldovan literary critic, historian, essayist, and politician. Born on September 3, 1942, in Larga, Hotin County (now Briceni District), he pursued his education in philology at Moldova State University, graduating in 1965. Over his career, he has held various significant roles in the cultural and literary fields of Moldova.Cimpoi is best known for his extensive work on Romanian literature, particularly his contributions to the study of Mihai Eminescu. He authored the monumental Mihai Eminescu. Encyclopedic Dictionary and An Open History of Romanian Literature in Bessarabia. His scholarship has earned him recognition as one of the most profound Eminescu scholars of the last fifty years.In addition to his literary work, Cimpoi served as president of the Union of Writers of Moldova from 1991 to 2010 and has been involved in political activities, including serving as a member of the Moldovan Parliament.
