Andrei Eșanu, born July 16, 1948, in Sculeni village, Moldova, was a historian specializing in the medieval and modern culture and civilization of Southeastern and Eastern Europe. A former member of the Communist Party, he worked extensively at the Institute of History of the ASM. Despite losing his sight in 1994, Eșanu continued his scholarly pursuits, often collaborating with his wife, Valentina Eșanu.His research spanned diverse topics, including education history, medieval historiography, and the history of printed books and manuscripts. Notable works include monographs on Moldovan education and Dimitrie Cantemir's Description of Moldova. Eșanu actively contributed to academic and cultural life, serving as president of the theoretical seminar at the Institute of History, State and Law and participating in various editorial boards.Eșanu's influence extended to teaching at institutions such as the State Pedagogical University Ion Creangă and contributing to the revival of theological education in Moldova. In 2010, he was appointed to a commission tasked with studying the totalitarian communist regime in Moldova.
