Dumitru Sofroni, born on April 5, 1956, in the Râșcani district, Costești village, embarked on a remarkable journey in the field of medicine, particularly in oncology, spanning over four decades. His educational background includes completing secondary school in his hometown and pursuing studies at the medical college in Bălți. Subsequently, he enrolled in the General Medicine Faculty at the State Medical Institute in Chișinău in 1977.His academic pursuits continued with clinical residency in Oncology at the same institute from 1983 to 1985. After completing his studies, he joined as an assistant at the Department of Oncology. Furthering his expertise, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Oncology Institute N.N. Petrov in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he defended his doctoral thesis in medical sciences in gynecological oncology in 1989.Returning to Moldova, he resumed his academic career as an assistant professor at the Department of Oncology at the State Medical Institute in Chișinău. His dedication and contributions were recognized in 1992 when he was appointed as an associate professor. Subsequently, he served as the Vice-Director for Scientific, Organizational, and Methodological Work at the Oncology Institute, a position he held until 1996.In 1996, after successfully defending his habilitation thesis in medical sciences on the clinical and morphological argumentation for individualizing the treatment of uterine cancer, Sofroni was appointed as the Director of the Oncology Institute of the Republic of Moldova. His tenure as director until 2009 was marked by significant achievements in scientific research, medical education, and patient care.Throughout his career, Sofroni has been actively involved in scientific and organizational activities both nationally and internationally. He has authored over 250 scientific papers, including a treatise on oncology, seven monographs, and numerous chapters in international textbooks. His research contributions have been recognized with patents, medals, and awards, including the State Prize and Orders of Merit from both Moldova and Belgium.In addition to his academic and scientific endeavors, Sofroni has made substantial contributions to the improvement of oncological services in Moldova. He spearheaded several national and international projects aimed at implementing advanced technologies and enhancing patient care. His leadership also extended to professional associations and councils, where he played a pivotal role in shaping oncological policies and practices.Today, as the head of the Oncology Department at the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy N. Testemițanu in Chișinău, Sofroni continues to inspire and educate the next generation of medical professionals. His lifelong dedication to oncology has left an indelible mark on the field, benefiting countless patients and advancing medical science in Moldova and beyond.
