Within my work, I aim at understanding the use of emerging technologies like (augmented/virtual reality) simulation games to create situational awareness in complex, socio-technical systems. This includes to understand how realistic a simulation game should be designed in order to have a positive effect on communication processes and situational awareness (SA). In my studies so far, I gathered insights in design requirements for effective simulation games, which can be used to empower people to participate in complex (work) situations and systems, as one contribution to research in the gaming field. In my future research, I aim at developing a design matrix for simulation games based on my findings regarding simulation game fidelity. Furthermore, I aim at understanding the requirements for and the characteristics of SA as a precondition for a well-functioning complex system, and how emerging technologies like simulation games can provide the adequate information to support this process.
