Entity: Northumbria University
Category: University
Description: Northumbria University (legally the University of Northumbria at Newcastle) is a university located in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England, gaining university status in 1992. Northumbria University has its origins in three Newcastle colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, which was established by John Hunter Rutherford in 1880 and opened formally in 1894 by the Duke of York (later King George V), the College of Art & Industrial Design and the Municipal College of Commerce. In the Research Assessment Exercise 2008 a small amount of research in nine of twelve areas submitted was described as "world leading". Whereas in the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise, Northumbria was one of the top 50 for research power and the university which has risen fastest up the rankings.
1. Project: Testing an early online intervention for the treatment of disturbed sleep during the COVID-19 pandemic.
2. Project: COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium
Summary: The University of Northumbria is a member of the project 'COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium'. The COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium is a collaboration between the NHS, Public Health England and other UK public health agencies, the Wellcome Sanger Institute, University of Cambridge and other academic institutions. The COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium aims to increase the current capacity for SARS-CoV-2 genetic sequencing in the UK. This sequencing data will be used to understand the epidemiology and spread of the virus, and to monitor and evaluate interventions for COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 genomic data will be integrated with NHS electronic health records and other existing genomic data to generate insights into susceptibility to COVID-19. From within the DPHPC, Professor John Danesh is a member of the COG-UK Steering Group, Dr Ewan Harrison will serve as the Scientific Project Manager and Dr Michael Chapman will lead the health informatics component.
