Natural Environment Research Council (NERC): Government against COVID-19 Grant Funding

Entity: Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

Category: Non-Governmental

Description: The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is the UK’s main agency for funding and managing research, training and knowledge exchange in atmospheric, Earth, biological, terrestrial and aquatic sciences. NERC works with the UK Research and Innovation.

1. Programme Title: NERC Urgency Grant Scheme COVID-19

Summary: The NERC Urgency Grant scheme exists to provide funding for unexpected and transient scientific opportunities created by unpredictable natural events. NERC welcome Urgency proposals related to the current Coronavirus outbreak. Research must fall predominantly within the NERC remit. Proposals will need to be sensitive to social distancing and other restrictions being brought in as a result of the current situation. For this exceptional situation, the urgency process will be slightly different to the normal process to help them process the requests as quickly as possible. NERC urgency grants allow scientists to respond rapidly to unexpected and transient events affecting the environment, for example the 2010 Amazon drought or the eruption at Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano in the same year.

2. Programme Title: COVID-19 Public Engagement grant

Summary: The Natural Environment Research Council invites proposals for its COVID-19 public engagement grant. This supports public engagement with environmental science that understands, addresses or mitigates the impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak. Projects must support the objectives and approach in the NERC public engagement with research and innovation strategy, and must be sensitive to social distancing and other restrictions being brought in as a result of the current situation.
