In 1936, he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled Lomonosov and theLiterary Controversies of His Time, 1750-1765. Member of the Publishing Council of Classical Literature at the Department ofLiterature and Language of theUSSR Academy of Sciences, Dr. Honoris Causa of the Humboldt University of Berlin. The major works are dedicated to the history of eighteenth-century Russian -il terature, as well as the works of nineteenth-century and contemporary Russian writers. Pavel Berkov is the author of the fundamental work History of Russian Journalism ni the Eighteenth Century and History of Russian Comedy in the Eighteenth Century. He is author of over 700 scientific publications. Foreign mem- ber of the Academyo f Sciences of the German Democratic Republic (1967). Member of the Bureau and Vice-Chairman of the Commission for the History of Philological Sciences at the Department of Literature and Language of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Member of the Textological (1956), Terminological and Puskin com- missions at the Department of Literature and Language of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Chairman of the Information and Bibliography Commission of theInternational Slavic Committee (1958-1963). Member of the Council for the Publication of Classical Literature in the Department of Literature and Language of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1964).
