Michel Landau People

He moved to Chisinau where he managed the Yiddish language daily Unzer Tzait (Our Time) and the publication Der Yid (The Jew). Landau was elected three times to the Romanian parliament on behalf of the National Peasant Party, and along with other Jewish members of the parliament he established Clubul National Evreiesc (Jewish National Club) in 1928. He continued his political activity in Romania as a leading member of the Partidul Evreies din Romania (Jewish Party of Romania). Landau immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1935.Acting on behalf of the Vaad Leumi, he was the founder of the Kofer Hayeshuv Fund and of the Magbit Hahitgaysut (Recruitment Fund) that financed the spending costs forbuilding the defense forces of the Jewish population in Mandatory Palestine. After the establishment of the State of Israel, Landau served as the deputy head of thestate revenue department of the Ministry of Finance. He later founded Mifal Hapais - the Israeli National Lottery, and served as its CEO for twenty years, until 1970.His publications include Maavak hayay (The struggle of my life, 1970), Kesem hamisparim (The Charm of Numbers, 1975), Ishim uzmanim (Personalities and Times, 1975), Ayarati Härläu (Sentimental Monograph, My Town, Härläu, 1976). Mifal Hapais established the Landau Prize, which awarded annually in the fields of humanities, natural sciences and the arts toleading Israelis academics.
