In the War of Independence fought in the Air Service of Defense, served in Squadron Aand in March 1948 recorded a 40-hour flight which carried out reconnais-sance flights, dropping supplies to besieged towns, escort convoys to Jerusalem and transportation officers. As a resident ofKibbutz Beit Keshet, he worked to transfer airpower to the Galilee in order to assist the forces and communities on the defensive. He was one of the founders of the Galilee Squadron in April 1948, when he andtwo of his colleagues in Squadron A landed two Oster autocrat aircraft at Yavneel. Afew hours after the landing, Nahum Golan, deputy commander of the Golani Brigade, took off again in the back seat on an observation mission on Mishmar HaEmek. Peledserved as the squadron's third commander from May 10 to August 6, 1948. During his service in the squadron, he participated in 80 sorties, including 26 bombing raids. In September of that year he was sent to Olomouc in Czechoslovakia to undergo flight training on Avia S-199 aircraft purchased by the Air Force. Once trainees were ex- pelled from the country following a decision by the Communist regime, he returned to Israel, was placed in November at 101 Squadron and went on the course at the base of principle, in what is called a course minus .1 The pilot's wings in principle accep- ted at the May 1949. Served as Operations Officer of the 101st Squadron and from December 1950 to the end of March 1951 served as Comander.
